Ear stimulation shows promise for aging nerves — but Don't get excited yet

NCT ID NCT07292623

First seen Jan 03, 2026 · Last updated Jun 20, 2026 · Updated 24 times

Summary

This study tested whether gentle electrical stimulation on a specific part of the ear can improve the balance between the 'fight-or-flight' and 'rest-and-digest' nervous systems in healthy older adults aged 65 to 80. Twelve participants received active or sham stimulation while heart rate variability was measured. The goal was to see if this simple, non-invasive technique could help counteract age-related nervous system imbalance.

transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) device

What this could lead to

If successful, this could point toward a non-drug way to help older adults maintain better nervous system balance.

What could go wrong

This is a very small, early study with only 12 healthy participants. It tests a temporary effect, not a treatment, so results may not apply to people with health conditions.
