New study tests if knocking out moms during painful C-Sections prevents trauma

NCT ID NCT07334418

First seen Jan 12, 2026 · Last updated Apr 30, 2026 · Updated 13 times

Summary

Some women feel severe pain during a C-section even with spinal or epidural anesthesia, which can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after childbirth. This pilot study will test whether giving general anesthesia (being fully asleep) right away, compared to using pain-relieving IV drugs, can help prevent PTSD. The study plans to enroll 600 women who experience pain during their C-section after the baby is born.
