Fasting before surgery: safe or risky?

NCT ID NCT01258361

First seen Nov 17, 2025 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 30 times

Summary

This study looked at whether not eating before surgery (preoperative fasting) causes low blood volume. 100 patients scheduled for gynecological or visceral surgery had their blood volume checked with an echocardiogram before and after fasting. The goal was to see if fasting increases the risk of hypovolemia, which is when the body doesn't have enough blood.
