First seen Feb 28, 2026 · Last updated Apr 25, 2026 · Updated 7 times

Summary

This study looked at whether reading a storybook or playing with a hand puppet can reduce fear in children aged 4 to 7 before outpatient surgery. Researchers divided 99 children into three groups: standard care, storybook, or puppet. They measured fear and emotional distress about an hour before surgery and again right before entering the operating room to see which method helped children feel calmer.
