Can texting patients after ER visits reduce overcrowding?
NCT ID NCT07447674
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether using digital tools like app notifications, WhatsApp, and email can speed up patient follow-up after leaving the emergency department, compared to standard phone calls. About 466 low-risk adults will be randomly assigned to one of two communication strategies. The goal is to see if digital reminders help patients connect with the hospital faster, which could ease ER overcrowding.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that digital reminders (app, WhatsApp, email) speed up patient follow-up after ER discharge, potentially reducing overcrowding.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study, not yet recruiting. Results may not apply to all hospitals or patients without smartphones. The primary outcome is contact time, not health outcomes.
