New digital ear scope aims to slash unnecessary antibiotics in children
NCT ID NCT07328555
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares a digital otoscope (a high-tech ear scope) to a standard one for diagnosing ear infections in young children. Four pediatric clinics in Massachusetts will take part, with two using the digital device and two using the usual scope. The goal is to see if the digital tool helps doctors diagnose ear infections more accurately and reduce unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Digital otoscope (Wispr Digital Otoscope)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could help doctors diagnose ear infections more accurately and cut down on unnecessary antibiotic use in children.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 4 clinics and 36 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The digital otoscope might not improve diagnosis enough to change prescribing habits.
