New trial tests which surgery heals diabetic skin infections faster

NCT ID NCT07428265

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares two surgical techniques for treating carbuncles (large, deep skin infections) in people with diabetes aged 25 to 70. One method uses a cross-shaped cut to drain the infection, while the other removes more tissue. Both are followed by a vacuum device to help healing. The trial will measure blood loss and how long wounds take to heal in 124 participants.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

surgical procedure (cruciate incision and drainage or saucerization) followed by vacuum-assisted closure

What this could lead to

If one technique proves better, it could lead to faster healing and less blood loss for diabetic patients with carbuncles.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 124 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. Both procedures carry infection and scarring risks.
