New nerve block cocktail aims to ease shoulder surgery pain

NCT ID NCT07626346

First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether adding dexmedetomidine to the numbing drug bupivacaine in a nerve block can improve pain control after shoulder surgery. About 84 adults having laparoscopic shoulder surgery will be randomly assigned to receive either the drug combo or bupivacaine alone. The main goal is to see how long pain relief lasts and whether it reduces the need for additional painkillers.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ€” not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
dexmedetomidine added to bupivacaine
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide longer-lasting pain relief after shoulder surgery and reduce the need for opioids.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 84 participants. The added drug may not improve pain control and could cause side effects like low blood pressure or slow heart rate.
