Could a drug combo make labor epidurals safer?
NCT ID NCT07506044
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study will test whether adding two different doses of dexmedetomidine to the standard epidural drug bupivacaine can provide effective labor pain relief while using less bupivacaine. Researchers plan to enroll 140 women in early labor. The goal is to see if this approach reduces the total dose of bupivacaine needed and improves outcomes like pain scores and satisfaction.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
dexmedetomidine added to bupivacaine
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help reduce the amount of bupivacaine needed for labor epidurals, potentially lowering side effects while still controlling pain.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study that hasn't started recruiting yet. Results may not apply to all women, and adding dexmedetomidine could cause unexpected side effects like drowsiness or low blood pressure.
