Calming the storm: sedative tested as lifesaver for deadly heart rhythms

NCT ID NCT06281977

First seen Jan 09, 2026 · Last updated Apr 12, 2026 · Updated 16 times

Summary

This study is testing whether a sedative medication called dexmedetomidine can help control a life-threatening condition called 'electrical storm,' where the heart's lower chambers beat dangerously fast and repeatedly. About 192 adult patients in intensive care units with this condition will be randomly assigned to receive either the sedative or a placebo for 2-3 days as part of their initial treatment. The main goal is to see if the drug reduces the combined risk of dying in the hospital or having another dangerous heart rhythm episode that needs treatment.
