First seen Feb 16, 2026 · Last updated May 20, 2026 · Updated 18 times

Summary

This study tested whether adding dexamethasone (a steroid) to the numbing drug bupivacaine could improve pain control during and after upper arm surgery. Fifty-four adults having elbow, forearm, or hand surgery received either the combination or bupivacaine alone via an ultrasound-guided nerve block. The combination led to faster numbness and longer-lasting pain relief, reducing the need for extra painkillers.
