Diabetes drug could help rare kidney disease patients

NCT ID NCT06420167

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This phase 2 trial tests whether dapagliflozin, a diabetes drug, is safe and can lower high urine protein levels in people with renal AL amyloidosis—a rare condition where abnormal proteins damage the kidneys. About 20 participants will take the drug daily for 6 months and be monitored via telemedicine. The main goal is to see if at least 30% of patients achieve a 30% drop in protein in their urine.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

dapagliflozin (a diabetes drug that helps the kidneys)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a new way to reduce kidney damage and protein loss in renal AL amyloidosis patients.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial with only 20 participants, so results may not apply widely. The drug may not reduce protein levels enough, and side effects are possible.
