Could ECG and ultrasound replace X-Rays for central line checks?

NCT ID NCT07291869

First seen Jan 03, 2026 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 23 times

Summary

This study looks at whether using heart electrical signals (ECG) and ultrasound at the bedside can safely confirm that a central line (a large IV in the neck) is in the right place and has not caused a lung puncture. About 75 critically ill adults will be randomly assigned to either standard care or these new techniques, and all will still get a chest X-ray for comparison. The goal is to see if these methods are practical and accurate enough to reduce the need for X-rays in the future.
