Simple blood test may reveal early if lung cancer therapy works

NCT ID NCT03926260

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looked at 100 people with advanced non-small cell lung cancer to see if changes in tumor DNA in the blood (ctDNA) can predict how well treatment is working. Researchers took blood samples before treatment, at 3 weeks, and at 9 weeks. The goal was to see if a rise or fall in ctDNA levels matches tumor shrinkage or growth on scans. This is an observational pilot study, not a test of a new drug.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a simple blood test to quickly tell if lung cancer treatment is working, helping doctors adjust therapy earlier.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early pilot study (100 people) that only observes DNA changes—it does not test a new treatment. The findings may not apply to all patients or lead to a reliable test.
