Blood test could catch dangerous surgical leaks before they become emergencies

NCT ID NCT03097276

Summary

This pilot study tested a new system to catch dangerous internal leaks early after colon cancer surgery. Researchers monitored patients' CRP (a marker of inflammation in the blood) in the days after their operation. If CRP levels were high, doctors followed a specific plan to quickly check for a leak and start treatment sooner, aiming to reduce hospital stays and complications.
