New combo therapy aims to clear cloudy corneas by zapping and blocking blood vessels

NCT ID NCT07642960

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests a two-step treatment for corneal neovascularization, where abnormal blood vessels grow on the clear front part of the eye. First, doctors use a fine needle with heat to seal off the vessels, then inject a drug called bevacizumab to prevent regrowth. The trial will enroll 51 adults with stable corneal blood vessels and measure how much the vessels shrink over 12 months.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Bevacizumab (a drug that blocks blood vessel growth) and fine-needle diathermy (a procedure using heat to seal off abnormal blood vessels)

What this could lead to

If successful, this combination could offer a safe, effective way to reduce abnormal corneal blood vessels and potentially improve vision in affected patients.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial with only 51 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Risks include infection, scarring, or the blood vessels returning.
