Chilling the body to heal lungs: new hope for a deadly condition
NCT ID NCT04545424
Summary
This study is testing if lowering a patient's body temperature (therapeutic hypothermia) can help treat Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), a severe lung injury with a high death rate. About 340 patients with moderate to severe ARDS will be randomly assigned to receive either 48 hours of controlled cooling plus muscle-relaxing drugs or standard temperature care. The main goal is to see if the cooling treatment helps patients spend more days alive and off a breathing machine in the first 28 days.
