New ultrasound technique could improve fluid management in heart surgery

NCT ID NCT07305051

First seen Jan 05, 2026 · Last updated May 14, 2026 · Updated 27 times

Summary

This study compares two ultrasound methods for measuring the inferior vena cava, a major vein that shows fluid status, in 283 adults scheduled for heart surgery. The standard method uses a view below the breastbone, which can be difficult in some patients. The alternative uses the liver as a window and may be easier. The scan takes less than 10 minutes, is painless, and does not change patient care.
