New study tests better ways to clean infected dental implants without surgery

NCT ID NCT06849856

First seen Apr 24, 2026 · Last updated May 25, 2026 · Updated 6 times

Summary

This study tested three non-surgical cleaning methods for peri-implantitis, a gum infection around dental implants that can cause bone loss. Thirty-eight adults with deep gum pockets around their implants received either manual cleaning with titanium tools, an air abrasion device, or both. Researchers measured gum pocket depth, bleeding, and inflammatory markers in gum fluid over 6 months to see which approach worked best.
