Laser showdown: which technology smashes kidney stones best?
NCT ID NCT07516106
First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study will compare two types of lasers used to break up kidney stones during a procedure called ureteroscopy. About 70 adults with a single kidney stone or multiple stones totaling 7-20 mm will be randomly assigned to receive either a pulsed Thulium:YAG laser or a pulse-modulated Holmium:YAG laser. The main goal is to see which laser leaves fewer stone fragments behind one month after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Thulium:YAG laser and Holmium:YAG laser (Moses technology)
- What this could lead to
- If one laser proves more effective, it could become the preferred tool for kidney stone removal, leading to faster procedures and fewer residual fragments.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage comparison study with only 70 participants. Results may not apply to all stone types or sizes, and neither laser is expected to be a breakthrough cure.
