Can sharing the cost of vaccines in pharmacies boost uptake?
NCT ID NCT06489964
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a co-payment model in community pharmacies can make recommended but unfunded vaccines more accessible and acceptable. About 600 participants in Nova Scotia and Ontario will pay a reduced cost for vaccines like FluMist or Shingrix. Researchers will survey both the public and pharmacists to see if this approach is feasible and well-received.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Co-payment model (reduced vaccine cost)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that sharing the cost of vaccines in pharmacies makes them more accessible, potentially increasing vaccination rates.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study with only 600 participants in two provinces, so results may not apply everywhere. It tests feasibility, not whether the vaccines work.
