New drug combo challenges chemo for leukemia treatment

Summary
This study tested whether a newer, chemotherapy-free combination of two targeted drugs (venetoclax and ibrutinib) could be as good as or better than the standard chemotherapy-based treatment (FCR) for patients with intermediate-risk chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). It involved 120 previously untreated, fit patients. A key feature was using a sensitive test to measure tiny amounts of leftover cancer cells to guide when to stop the new drugs, aiming for a shorter, fixed treatment duration.
