Could a better stove save your lungs? major trial tests clean cooking
NCT ID NCT07005193
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study is testing whether switching from solid fuels (like coal or wood) to cleaner liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) stoves, and adding kitchen ventilation fans, can reduce indoor air pollution and improve heart and lung health. About 1,200 households in China will be split into four groups: some keep their usual cooking methods, others get LPG stoves, some get vents, and some get both. Researchers will measure air pollution levels and check participants' heart rate variability and lung function over a year.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) stoves and kitchen ventilation fans
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that simple changes like cleaner stoves and vents can prevent heart and lung damage from indoor smoke in low-resource settings.
What could go wrong
This is a large trial, but it measures pollution levels and early health changes, not actual disease rates. Results may not apply to other regions or fuel types.
