New sedation drug ciprofol tested against propofol for safer anesthesia in seniors

NCT ID NCT07670923

First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study compares ciprofol and propofol, two drugs used to sedate elderly patients (ages 65-80) during short medical procedures without a breathing tube. Researchers will monitor heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing for 5 minutes after giving the drug. The goal is to see which drug causes fewer side effects on the heart and lungs. 108 participants will be enrolled at a single hospital in China.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ€” not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
ciprofol and propofol
What this could lead to
If ciprofol proves safer for heart and lung function, it could become a preferred sedation option for elderly patients undergoing short procedures.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial (108 participants) comparing two drugs, so results may not apply broadly. Both drugs carry risks like low blood pressure or breathing problems.
