Could a common antibiotic cure a parasitic skin disease?
NCT ID NCT06798402
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether injecting the antibiotic ciprofloxacin directly into skin sores caused by leishmaniasis works as well as the standard treatment, sodium stibogluconate. Eighty people with one to seven sores will be randomly assigned to receive weekly injections of one drug or the other. The sores will be monitored for up to 90 days to see which treatment leads to better healing.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
ciprofloxacin (an antibiotic) and sodium stibogluconate (a standard anti-parasitic drug)
What this could lead to
If ciprofloxacin works as well as the standard treatment, it could offer a more widely available and cheaper option for treating cutaneous leishmaniasis.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial with only 80 participants. Ciprofloxacin may not be as effective as the standard drug, and results may not apply to all types of leishmaniasis.
