New calculator could slash unnecessary antibiotics in newborns

NCT ID NCT06643052

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study will look at how using a risk calculator changes the way doctors manage suspected early-onset sepsis in newborns. Researchers will compare data from before and after the calculator was introduced at one hospital, involving about 6,300 infants. The goal is to see if the calculator reduces unnecessary blood tests and antibiotics while still keeping babies safe.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that using a risk calculator safely reduces unnecessary blood tests and antibiotics in newborns, saving costs and avoiding side effects.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study comparing past and present practices, not a controlled trial. Results may not apply to other hospitals, and the calculator might not reduce risks as expected.
