Could an old antibiotic help Parkinson's dementia?
NCT ID NCT03413384
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether the antibiotic ceftriaxone can improve thinking and memory in people with mild to moderate Parkinson's disease dementia. About 100 participants will receive either ceftriaxone or a placebo intravenously twice a week. The main goal is to see if ceftriaxone slows the decline in dementia symptoms over time.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
ceftriaxone (an antibiotic given intravenously)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a new treatment to slow or improve dementia symptoms in people with Parkinson's disease.
What could go wrong
This is an early Phase 2 study with only 100 participants, so results may not be conclusive. Ceftriaxone is an antibiotic, not a standard dementia drug, and its effect on Parkinson's dementia is uncertain.
