A simple test could forecast kidney disease progression
NCT ID NCT07754019
First seen Aug 10, 2026 · Last updated Aug 11, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This observational study explores whether levels of a protein called soluble CD163 in blood or urine can reflect how active IgA nephropathy is and how it might progress. Researchers will compare these levels among people with IgA nephropathy, those with a similar kidney condition (FSGS), and healthy controls. They will also track kidney function and protein in the urine over time to see if CD163 levels predict outcomes. The goal is to find a noninvasive biomarker that could help monitor the disease without repeated biopsies.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If soluble CD163 proves reliable, it could become a simple blood or urine test to gauge kidney inflammation and forecast outcomes, reducing the need for repeated biopsies.
- What could go wrong
- This is an observational study, not a treatment trial, so it cannot prove cause and effect. The marker may not be specific enough or may not outperform existing tests.
