New IV catheter design tested to stay in place longer, reduce patient pokes

NCT ID NCT07182877

Summary

This study compared how long two different types of IV catheters (open and closed systems) could stay safely in place for patients in a respiratory intensive care unit. Researchers enrolled 100 patients to see if the newer 'closed' design, which is less messy and has a built-in stabilizer, lasts longer before needing replacement than the standard 'open' type. The goal is to reduce complications like infections and the need for repeated needle sticks, improving patient comfort and safety during hospital stays.
