Sham surgery showdown: is MALS operation real relief or placebo?
NCT ID NCT05468580
First seen Mar 22, 2026 · Last updated May 12, 2026 · Updated 5 times
Summary
This study tests whether a keyhole surgery to release a compressed belly artery (coeliac artery release) truly reduces chronic abdominal pain in people with Median Arcuate Ligament Syndrome (MALS). Half of the 70 participants will get the real surgery, and the other half will get a sham (fake) surgery, so we can see if the procedure itself or just the belief in treatment helps. The goal is to settle the debate on whether this surgery is an effective treatment for MALS.
