Green diagnosis: study pits EUS against MRCP to slash carbon footprint

NCT ID NCT07283185

First seen Jan 05, 2026 · Last updated May 07, 2026 · Updated 20 times

Summary

This study compares the carbon footprint of two tests used to diagnose gallstones in the bile duct: endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP). Both tests are equally accurate, but MRCP uses large, power-hungry machines, while EUS is more portable and uses less energy. Researchers will measure the total carbon dioxide emissions for each procedure in 200 adults with a moderate chance of gallstones, aiming to identify which approach is more environmentally friendly.
