Clearer scans, better aim: new spinal screws could sharpen cancer radiation

NCT ID NCT06293157

Summary

This study is testing if using carbon fiber screws to stabilize the spine in cancer patients leads to better radiation treatment outcomes than standard titanium screws. When cancer spreads to the spine, surgeons often place metal screws for support, but these can blur follow-up scans and make precise radiation targeting difficult. Researchers are comparing the two screw types in 226 patients to see if the carbon fiber versions, which cause less scan interference, help doctors better control the cancer and detect its return sooner.
