Could a Carb-Rich diet tame a rare genetic disease?

NCT ID NCT06273644

First seen Apr 01, 2026 · Last updated Apr 29, 2026 · Updated 4 times

Summary

This study looks at whether eating a diet rich in carbohydrates can help people with acute intermittent porphyria (AIP), a rare genetic disorder that causes severe attacks of pain and other symptoms. About 50 adults with AIP will try two different diet plans—one high in carbs and one moderate—for four weeks each. Researchers will measure changes in disease markers, symptoms, and overall health to see if a high-carb diet can reduce attacks and improve well-being.
