Could a daily antibiotic stop a deadly hospital infection?

NCT ID NCT07221370

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether giving a daily dose of oral vancomycin can prevent Clostridioides difficile (C. diff) infection in critically ill adults who are already on other antibiotics in the hospital. About 176 high-risk patients will receive either vancomycin or a placebo while they are in the hospital and for a short time after. Researchers will track who develops C. diff and also watch for any rise in antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Vancomycin (an antibiotic taken by mouth)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could give doctors a simple way to prevent dangerous C. diff infections in high-risk hospital patients, reducing illness and deaths.

What could go wrong

This is a mid-stage trial with only 176 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. There is also a risk that using vancomycin could increase antibiotic-resistant bacteria like VRE.
