New MRI scan could replace needle biopsy for kidney disease

NCT ID NCT06202235

First seen Feb 16, 2026 · Last updated May 21, 2026 · Updated 16 times

Summary

This study tests whether a special MRI scan (called MRE) can measure kidney scarring in people with early chronic kidney disease. Currently, doctors use a needle biopsy to check for scarring, which is invasive and can miss patchy damage. The study will follow 200 adults for at least 2 years to see if MRE results match how their kidney function changes over time.
