Could a common probiotic keep precancerous colon polyps away?

NCT ID NCT07167342

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether taking a probiotic called Clostridium butyricum can prevent colorectal adenomas (precancerous polyps) from returning after they are removed during a colonoscopy. About 294 adults aged 18-75 who have had all visible polyps removed will take either the probiotic or a placebo daily for up to 3 years. They will have yearly colonoscopies to check for new polyps.

What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, safe way to prevent precancerous colon polyps from returning after removal.
