Could a gut bug stop colon polyps from coming back?

NCT ID NCT07167342

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 17, 2026 · Updated 29 times

Summary

This study tests whether taking a probiotic called Clostridium butyricum can prevent colorectal adenomas (precancerous polyps) from returning after they are removed during a colonoscopy. About 294 adults who have had polyps removed will take either the probiotic or a placebo daily for up to 3 years, with yearly colonoscopies to check for new polyps. The goal is to find a simple, safe way to lower the risk of polyp recurrence and potentially colorectal cancer.
