New method may help tiny babies breathe without a tube

NCT ID NCT04209946

First seen Jan 05, 2026 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 20 times

Summary

This study looked at 180 premature babies born between 24 and 30 weeks to see if giving lung medicine (surfactant) through a thin tube instead of a breathing tube could reduce the need for a ventilator in the first three days of life. Babies were randomly assigned to get the medicine via the less invasive method or to stay on standard breathing support (CPAP). The goal was to find a gentler way to help fragile lungs while avoiding more aggressive breathing machines.
