Could a simple buddy tape replace clunky splints for hand fractures?
NCT ID NCT06734364
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares buddy taping (taping a broken finger to a healthy one) with a standard splint for treating non-thumb hand fractures. About 96 adults with minor shaft fractures will be randomly assigned to one of the two treatments. The main goal is to see if hand function and strength two months later are as good with buddy taping as with a splint.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
buddy tape (a device that tapes an injured finger to a healthy neighbor finger)
What this could lead to
If buddy taping works as well as a splint, it could offer a simpler, more comfortable way to treat certain hand fractures.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 96 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Buddy taping might not provide enough support for some fractures.
