Brain scans and VR reveal hidden breathlessness patterns in terminal illnesses

NCT ID NCT07319039

First seen Jan 09, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 21 times

Summary

This study explores how the brain processes chronic breathlessness in people with advanced cancer, COPD, or heart failure. Researchers will use brain scans (fMRI) and virtual reality to see if different diseases cause different breathlessness patterns. The goal is to learn if current treatments, like opioids, should be tailored to each disease. Only 16 participants are needed, and the study focuses on whether this approach is practical and acceptable to patients.
