Breaking the spray cycle: new study tackles nasal decongestant addiction

NCT ID NCT04898764

First seen Jan 29, 2026 · Last updated May 15, 2026 · Updated 17 times

Summary

This study looked at people who have used nasal decongestant sprays for too long, causing a condition called rhinitis medicamentosa (a stuffy nose that gets worse when the spray wears off). In the first part, researchers checked if these users had an underlying nasal problem. In the second part, 72 participants followed a 12-week program using a nasal steroid spray and motivational interviews to help them stop using the decongestant. The goal was to see if they could quit for at least a week and stay off it long-term.
