Lung cancer trial questions need for immediate brain radiation in asymptomatic patients
NCT ID NCT05236946
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This Phase 3 trial is testing whether it is safe to delay brain radiotherapy in lung cancer patients with specific genetic mutations (EGFR/ALK) who have asymptomatic brain metastases. Participants will receive standard targeted therapy (TKI) and be randomly assigned to either immediate brain radiation or observation with radiation only if symptoms develop. The study aims to see if delaying radiation can maintain brain tumor control while avoiding unnecessary side effects.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) and brain radiotherapy (stereotactic radiosurgery or whole brain radiotherapy)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that delaying brain radiotherapy is safe for patients with asymptomatic brain metastases, allowing them to avoid side effects while still controlling the disease.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small Phase 3 trial (190 participants) and results may not apply to all lung cancer types. There is a risk that delaying radiotherapy could lead to worse brain tumor control.
