Squat smarter: study tests which pause makes you stronger
NCT ID NCT07461701
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looks at two ways of doing bodyweight squats to see which builds more leg strength and endurance. Fifty-two non-athletic young women aged 18-25 will be split into two groups: one stops each set when their movement speed drops by 15%, the other at 30%. They train three times a week for six weeks, and researchers measure improvements in chair stands and wall-sit time.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
body-weight squat training with specific velocity loss thresholds
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help design more efficient bodyweight exercise programs for improving leg strength and endurance in non-athletic young women.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 52 participants, so results may not apply to other groups. The intervention is simple exercise, so risks are low but benefits may be modest.
