New biologic patch aims to keep knees in place after first dislocation

NCT ID NCT06169800

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This pilot study tests whether adding a biologic scaffold (Biobrace®) to standard ligament repair surgery can reduce the chance of the kneecap dislocating again. The study will enroll 20 people aged 13 to 30 who have had a first-time lateral patellar dislocation within the past week. Researchers will compare the re-dislocation rate to the expected 30% rate seen with non-surgical care.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Biobrace® biologic ligament augment (device used during MPFL repair surgery)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could offer a minimally invasive surgical option to lower the chance of repeat knee dislocation after a first-time injury.

What could go wrong

This is a very small pilot study with only 20 people, so results may not apply to everyone. The device is new and its long-term safety and effectiveness are not yet proven.
