ICU kidney shield: simple fluid swap could protect vulnerable patients

NCT ID NCT01636089

Summary

This study tested whether a bicarbonate fluid solution works better than the standard saline solution to protect the kidneys of very sick patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) who need a special dye for medical scans. It involved 300 critically ill adults to see which fluid more effectively prevents a sudden drop in kidney function caused by the dye. The goal was to find a safer, standard method to protect these high-risk patients from this common complication.
