Can a withdrawn myeloma drug make a comeback with a gentler schedule?

NCT ID NCT05874193

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether the drug belantamab mafodotin, given every 6 weeks alongside a steroid, can be safely used in community clinics for patients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma. The drug was previously removed from the market after a confirmatory study failed, but some patients still benefited. The trial will enroll 33 heavily pretreated patients, including elderly and frail individuals, to see if the every-6-week schedule is feasible and effective.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

belantamab mafodotin (a targeted antibody-drug conjugate) plus dexamethasone (a steroid)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that giving belantamab mafodotin every 6 weeks in community clinics is safe and effective, offering a more convenient option for patients with advanced multiple myeloma.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial (33 people) and the drug was previously withdrawn from the market after a confirmatory study failed. It is unclear if the every-6-week schedule will work as well as the standard every-3-week schedule.
