Can a TB vaccine stop bladder cancer from coming back?

NCT ID NCT06747455

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This Phase 3 trial tests whether a therapeutic BCG vaccine, given directly into the bladder, can prevent non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer from returning after surgery. About 439 adults with intermediate- or high-risk cancer are participating. The study compares BCG to an active control, with follow-up for up to 2 years to see who remains cancer-free.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guérin) vaccine

What this could lead to

If successful, this could provide a proven way to prevent bladder cancer from coming back after surgery, reducing the need for more aggressive treatments.

What could go wrong

This is a Phase 3 trial, but results are not yet available. BCG therapy can cause side effects like bladder irritation or infection, and it may not work for everyone.
