Gum treatment may improve your sense of smell, study finds

NCT ID NCT07424300

First seen Feb 27, 2026 · Last updated May 10, 2026 · Updated 12 times

Summary

This study looked at 101 adults with gum disease and bad breath to see if treating the gums could also improve their sense of smell. Participants received standard deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) over three sessions. Researchers measured bad breath gases and smell ability before and one week after treatment. The goal was to understand the link between oral health and smell, not to test a new drug or cure.
