NCT ID NCT04807660
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study collects a small sample of fluid from the ears of children aged 3 months to 15 years who have a draining ear infection (otorrhea). The goal is to identify which bacteria are present using standard lab tests and newer molecular methods. By understanding the bacterial causes, researchers hope to improve treatment decisions and antibiotic use. The study is currently recruiting 1,500 participants.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could help doctors better understand which bacteria cause ear infections in children, leading to more targeted antibiotic use.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It will not directly improve health outcomes, and results may not apply to all children or regions.
