Ear stimulation breakthrough helps babies avoid feeding tubes

NCT ID NCT04849507

Summary

This study tested a portable device called BabyStrong that delivers gentle nerve stimulation through the skin in front of the ear during bottle feeding. The goal was to help infants in the NICU who struggle with feeding learn to take all their nutrition by mouth, potentially avoiding the need for a surgical feeding tube. Some babies received the real stimulation for 10 days, while others received a sham (fake) treatment, and researchers compared how many achieved full oral feeding.
