Extra antibiotic shot aims to protect new moms after C-Section

NCT ID NCT06605118

Summary

This large study is testing if adding a single dose of the antibiotic azithromycin to the standard antibiotics given before a scheduled C-section can better prevent serious infections in mothers after delivery. It will involve 8,000 people having a planned or early C-section, who will be randomly assigned to receive either azithromycin or a placebo (saltwater) in addition to their usual care. The main goal is to see if this extra step reduces the risk of infections like endometritis or wound infections in the weeks after birth.
